For many, childhood passions fade with time, but for Adrienne McElwain, a lifelong fascination with rocks and minerals has shaped her career and inspired a movement. From humble beginnings in a family-owned rock shop to spearheading one of the most unique crystal festivals in the country, her journey is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the magic of minerals.
A Legacy Built on Stones
Adrienne’s story begins with her father, whose love for geology took root in fourth grade when he visited a small rock shop in Salt Lake City. That childhood interest blossomed into a career, leading him to study geology, work in the very same rock shop, and eventually take over the business when the original owner passed away. Growing up in this environment, Adrienne was immersed in the world of minerals, traveling for mining expeditions and learning the intricacies of the trade firsthand.
By 2018, her father’s health concerns led to the decision to close the family shop. But Adrienne wasn’t ready to let go of the passion that had shaped her life. She took the remaining inventory and launched a small-scale crystal festival in the store’s parking lot, allowing artists and miners to connect directly with the public. The success of this venture ignited a bold new idea: turning this event into a full-fledged business.
A Leap of Faith and the Pandemic Pivot
In 2019, Adrienne took a risk, investing $20,000 on her credit card to secure a venue and expand the event. Then, just as she was preparing for the festival’s big debut, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With events shutting down nationwide, she faced a daunting question: what now?
Rather than cancel, she took action. Through persistence and determination, she navigated the complex web of pandemic regulations, working with the health department to ensure her event could proceed safely. The result? Her crystal festival became the only major event to take place in that area of Utah within a six-week period, attracting visitors, media coverage, and even the mayor. It was an overwhelming success.
Expanding a Unique Vision Nationwide
Following the festival’s success, Adrienne recognized the potential to grow. What started as a one-time event quickly evolved into a nationwide series, expanding from an annual show to 15 events across the country. What makes these festivals so special is the seamless blend of geological expertise and metaphysical energy, offering something for everyone, from serious collectors to spiritual seekers.
The Crystal Festival isn’t just about buying and selling minerals; it’s about creating an experience. Attendees can explore everything from palm readings to mine-owner meet-and-greets, hands-on rockhounding trips, and interactive exhibits. “It’s the only place where you can get a palm reading and meet a mine owner in the same space,” Adrienne shares. “People love that mix of science, spirituality, and adventure.”
Bringing the Crystal Festival to Las Vegas
Now, for the first time, Adrienne is bringing her festival to Las Vegas. Taking place on March 15-16 at The INDUSTRIAL Event Space, the Las Vegas Crystal Festival promises an unparalleled experience for rock and mineral enthusiasts of all levels. Featuring over 50 vendors, the event will showcase world-class minerals, fossils, jewelry, interactive experiences like gold panning and fossil digs, and family-friendly activities, all with free admission and parking.
For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of crystals, whether for their beauty, geological significance, or healing properties. More seasoned collectors will find a space to network with mine owners, geologists, and artists. As Adrienne puts it, “If your kid won’t stop filling your washer with rocks, bring them here; we’ll teach them how to do it the right way!” When asked about the inspiration and energy surrounding these events, Crystal elaborated- “Not only are our events open to everybody, we really want everybody to come. If you are only going because your kid will not stop filling your washer full of rocks and minerals, we are so happy to have you, and we will show your kids all the options of collecting rocks and minerals! We're happy to take them out and teach them we have presentations like Scout presentations, where they can come get their merit badge. They just sign up on the website. If you are more advanced and you have a good sized collection, our events give you an opportunity to talk with mine owners and ask questions, or network about certain minerals and crystals that you are interested in. I've had people walk up to our booth before and just say, “I came because my pet died, I’ve been feeling sad, and I have always wanted to learn about crystal healing, but I know nothing about it.” I've spent two or three hours with them, teaching them things, walking them around to other crystal healers and showing them stuff that can help them. It can be so rewarding to get people started and introduce them to the beauty and healing of rocks and minerals. And it's just fun, and it's so rewarding to get people started.”
Spreading the Word: Social Media and Community Engagement
Adrienne and her team have harnessed the power of social media to promote their events, using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to connect with enthusiasts worldwide. They also collaborate with local businesses, distribute flyers, and run ads across streaming and radio platforms.
